Lord of the Flies
Acrylic on canvasboard, 11"x 14"

When the ideal of perfection has been marred and turned on its head,
one must examine the root of the problem and either blame
forces without, or acknowledge the cancer within.
The answer is blowing in the wind.

Woman with Blowing Hair

Picture of the Day
Woman with Hair Blowing
Ink on paper

Since my youth I have always been fascinated by the fluid beauty of a line.
I recall someone saying, "Why don't you finish it?" as if coloring it in would make it better.
As I see it, it's the simplicity that makes it elegant.

Seven High School Faces: Early Patterns

Pictures of the Day
Seven Faces From High School
Here are some more early drawings that I recently found in a folder, somewhat water damaged. What's interesting is how early I became interested in the patterns that formed when faces were partially illuminated when hidden in shadows. I hadn't seen these in nearly 50 years and was surprised at how to this day I continue to be fascinated with the patterns light produces on faces.

Examples of this pattern as borne out today:

Five Drawings From When I Was In High School

A couple weeks ago I found a folder with more of my drawings from high school. The folder had water damage and there are stains, but the images while a bit dark are original and inventive.

"Gross"
Deep Purple's third album, titled Tetragrammaton, featured cover art by Hieronymus Bosch. Their music was good, but it was Bosch's painting of hell that most resonated with what was going on in my mind at that time.  I was sixteen.

Three years ago John Heino gave me several canvases which he had used in a past life. This piece has several underpaintings before reaching a successful conclusion last night.
Inspired by a Dylan photo of recent vintage, and the song.

Sidewinder

Acrylic on canvas, 16"x 20"

One of our problems growing up in the Western world is too much dependence on the rational for understanding. We think we have to understand something rationally to "get it." In this sense the mind becomes a barrier to understanding.

Both music and anstract art can reach us in ways and places that representational paintings do not. Hence, many times the real meaning of a work is not found in what it is per se, but in how it feels.
